Banicki, as part of a joint venture with Myers & Sons Construction, was selected by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) for this project which includes several major components, all required to completed within an active international airport (LAX), requiring significant traffic and pedestrian control. The bridge component includes bridge jacking and removal/replacement of hinge concrete, bearing pads, and bridge joints at over 40 locations. Also included is over 550,000 SF of polyester concrete overlay, barrier rail replacement/modification at 78 locations, deck drainage retrofits, and re-striping traffic lanes for the entire departure level. The architectural component is designed to enhance the appearance of the LAX Central Terminal Area by installing 78 custom iconic light poles, a 6,000- ft long bridge mounted “light ribbon,” and custom structural steel and architectural metal canopies. The light ribbon consists of steel truss elements mounted to the exterior face of the bridge and barrier rail, which support a glass curtain wall and light box internally lit by computer controlled LED lighting. The civil component adds a traffic lane and modifies curb radii of existing roadways. The signalization component adds 12 new traffic signals as well as pedestrian push buttons throughout the Central Terminal Area.
